Structural Steelwork Drawings

Freelance Steelwork Draughtsman · Secondary Steelwork, Fabrication Details, Bolt Schedules

Structural Steelwork Drawings Service

I produce detailed drawings for structural and secondary steelwork - from simple access platforms and mezzanine floors to complex fabricated assemblies for major construction projects. My drawings are produced to fabrication standard, meaning they go straight to the workshop floor without needing to be reworked or clarified.

Steelwork fabricators and construction contractors often need drawing resource on a project basis - when workload peaks, when a project has unusual complexity, or when in-house draughting capacity is already committed. I provide that resource reliably and quickly, working remotely from my home-studio in Cornwall from your files and specifications, or on-site when needed.

Steelwork specialist

I understand how steelwork fabrication businesses work. Drawings need to be clear, complete, and produced to the conventions that workshop teams expect - consistent weld symbols, logical section references, bolt schedules that match the drawing, details that account for how steel is actually cut, drilled, and assembled.

I work to your drawing standards and can integrate with your existing drawing sets and numbering systems. Most work is handled remotely - you send me the design information, I produce the drawings, you receive DWG and PDF files ready for use.

For projects where on-site liaison with the design team or site visits are needed, I'm available to travel across the South West,

15+ years of experience

My steelwork drawing experience is grounded in 15 years of continuous work with Dearneside Fabrications Ltd in Sheffield - one of the UK's steelwork fabrication businesses - covering secondary steelwork and architectural metalwork for construction projects across the UK.

Projects ranged from simple access stairs and industrial platforms to prestigious commercial entrance staircases in mixed materials including steel, glass, and timber. This breadth of experience means I'm equally comfortable producing straightforward fabrication details and more complex architectural steelwork drawings where precision and presentation both matter.

Further steelwork experience includes dockside structural redevelopment work for Underhill Engineering Ltd in Plymouth and steelwork elements for Environment Agency infrastructure projects.

  • Yes. I'm experienced in taking structural engineer's calculations, section sizes, connection types, and loading information and translating these into fabrication-ready drawings. I understand the conventions steelwork engineers use and what information needs to appear on drawings to satisfy both fabrication and building control requirements.

  • Yes. I work to BS EN ISO standards and the BCSA/SCI drawing conventions that UK steelwork fabricators and structural engineers expect. Drawing symbols, weld notation, section references, bolt specifications - all produced to the standard your team and your building control inspector will expect to see.

  • Yes. Several clients use me on an ongoing basis - calling on drawing resource as projects demand rather than maintaining in-house draughting capacity permanently. If you'd like to establish a regular working arrangement, get in touch and we can discuss how that would work.

  • Across my career I've worked in manufacturing, steelworks, mining, construction, water and environment infrastructure, powdered metals, packaging machinery, architectural metalwork, and specialist process plant. The full list of sectors is on the About page — but the short answer is that if it involves mechanical engineering, I've most likely worked in or adjacent to it.

  • Yes, I work in both Inventor (3D) and in AutoCAD (2D). Get in touch to discuss the types of projects I can work on.

  • Revisions are part of the process and I handle them without drama. Minor revisions - corrections, dimension changes, additional notes - are typically included within the agreed fee for a project. Significant changes to scope are discussed before I proceed, so there are no surprises on either side. I keep drawing files organised so revisions are straightforward to make cleanly.

  • We offer flexible pricing based on project type and complexity. After an initial conversation, we’ll provide a transparent quote with no hidden costs.

  • Yes. For projects that require a site survey, on-site liaison, or working directly with an engineering or production team, I'm available to travel. I cover the Southwest regularly - Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset - and I frequently take on work in Yorkshire and the wider North of England where a good deal of my manufacturing and steelwork client base is located. For projects elsewhere in the UK, travel can be discussed depending on the size of the project.

  • I'm based in East Cornwall. Most of my work is carried out remotely from my home office - which suits the majority of technical drawing projects perfectly well. I also work regularly with clients in Yorkshire, where I have long-standing relationships with engineering and manufacturing businesses, and I take on site work across the Southwest as a matter of course.

  • I work primarily from my home office in Cornwall, which means I can take on projects quickly without travel overhead. For projects that benefit from on-site working — site surveys, liaison with production teams, or direct collaboration with engineers — I'm available to work at client premises.
