Architectural Metalwork Drawings Service
Architectural metalwork sits at the junction of engineering precision and visual design. The drawings need to satisfy two audiences simultaneously - the fabricator who needs exact dimensions and details to build from, and the architect or client who needs to see that the design intent has been correctly interpreted and can be delivered within budget.
I have extensive experience producing drawings for architectural stairs, balustrades, balconies, handrails, and feature metalwork - often in mixed materials including steel, glass, and timber. I work from architect's designs and specifications, producing fabrication-ready drawings with all the detail the workshop needs to build from.

Value engineering, within your budget
Architectural metalwork projects almost always have a budget constraint. Working from an architect's design intent, I'm experienced in finding the practical, cost-effective solution - identifying where standard sections and details can be used instead of bespoke fabrication, where connections can be simplified without compromising the design, and where site tolerance needs to be built into the detail.
This value engineering approach means the drawings I produce don't just look right - they're deliverable within the project budget and buildable by a standard fabrication contractor without specialist techniques.

Working With Architects, Contractors and Fabricators
My architectural metalwork experience spans 15 years of continuous work on construction projects across the UK, covering everything from simple mild steel access stairs for industrial buildings to prestigious entrance feature staircases for high-profile commercial developments.
Projects have included stairs, balustrades and balconies in stainless steel, mild steel, and aluminium, with mixed configurations incorporating glass infill panels and timber handrails.
I work directly with steelwork fabricators producing drawings from architect's designs, with main contractors coordinating metalwork packages, and with architectural practices needing drawing support for metalwork elements of larger projects. I'm familiar with the conventions and standards that architects, contractors, and building control expect - and I understand how architectural metalwork is fabricated and installed in practice.

Not necessarily. I regularly start from outline designs, sketch schemes, or even verbal descriptions combined with site measurements. The level of design information I need depends on the complexity of the metalwork. For straightforward stairs and balustrades, a basic layout drawing and specification is usually enough to get started. For more complex feature metalwork, more detailed design input helps - but we can discuss what's needed before you commit to anything.
-
I can provide drawing information and respond to technical queries, but formal contractual liaison is your responsibility as the contractor. In practice, I'm experienced in responding to architect's comments and building control queries about metalwork details and I'll support you through that process as much as I can.
-
Yes. Several clients use me on an ongoing basis - calling on drawing resource as projects demand rather than maintaining in-house draughting capacity permanently. If you'd like to establish a regular working arrangement, get in touch and we can discuss how that would work.

Mixed material details are common in architectural metalwork and I'm experienced in producing drawings that cover all the components clearly - steel fabrication details, glass fixing specifications, timber sections, connection details between different materials. The key is making sure each trade understands exactly what they're providing and how it connects to everything else. I produce drawings with that coordination in mind.

Yes, I work in both Inventor (3D) and in AutoCAD (2D). Get in touch to discuss the types of projects I can work on.

Yes. For projects that require a site survey, on-site liaison, or working directly with an engineering or production team, I'm available to travel. I cover the Southwest regularly - Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset - and I frequently take on work in Yorkshire and the wider North of England where a good deal of my manufacturing and steelwork client base is located. For projects elsewhere in the UK, travel can be discussed depending on the size of the project.
-
I'm based in East Cornwall. Most of my work is carried out remotely from my home office - which suits the majority of technical drawing projects perfectly well. I also work regularly with clients in Yorkshire, where I have long-standing relationships with engineering and manufacturing businesses, and I take on site work across the Southwest as a matter of course.
-
I work primarily from my home office in Cornwall, which means I can take on projects quickly without travel overhead. For projects that benefit from on-site working — site surveys, liaison with production teams, or direct collaboration with engineers — I'm available to work at client premises.

Yes. Tender drawings - clear enough for multiple fabricators to price from accurately - are a specific type of output that requires particular care. Ambiguity in tender drawings leads to inconsistent pricing and disputes later. I produce tender drawing packages that are explicit about scope, materials, and interfaces so that prices received reflect the same job.
