About me

My approach has always been the same: understand exactly what's needed, measure it properly, and produce drawings that the people building or fabricating can rely on without question.

There's a difference between someone who knows how to use CAD software and someone who understands what the drawings will be used for. Good drawings require engineering judgement - an understanding of how things are manufactured, how assemblies go together and what details need to be explicit rather than assumed. I've been building that understanding since 1979, when I started as a trainee draughtsman in Sheffield. I went freelance in 1987 and have contracted on 1000’s of projects across manufacturing, steelwork, process plant and infrastructure ever since.

My clients come back because the drawings I aim to produce don't need to be checked and corrected. That's what right first time actually means in practice.

  • I operate through Cometrule Ltd, a registered limited company. This means you can engage me directly as a supplier - I invoice as a limited company, which simplifies the commercial relationship and removes any IR35 ambiguity for clients who are particular about contractor status.

  • Both. Most drawing work is handled entirely remotely from my home office in Cornwall - you send information, I produce drawings, you receive files. For projects that benefit from on-site working - site surveys, liaison with engineering teams, or direct collaboration with production staff - I'm available to travel. I work regularly with clients in Yorkshire and across the Southwest.

  • I've been a freelance engineering draughtsman since 1979 — starting as a trainee at Wood Jenks & Co in Sheffield before going freelance in 1987 through my limited company Cometrule Ltd.

In the years since I've worked on 1000’s of projects across manufacturing, construction steelwork, process plant, water infrastructure, and specialist engineering - including long-running engagements with Dearneside Fabrications in Sheffield, Atomising Systems Ltd, and project work for the Environment Agency.

Some of the more unusual projects along the way have included drawings for the Channel Tunnel boring machine backup system and underground mining equipment for an Egyptian mine, and even a bench for Disneyland Paris.

I'm based in East Cornwall, work remotely for clients across the Southwest UK, and travel regularly working with clients in Yorkshire.

  • Get in touch with a description of your project - a brief, a sketch, or a description of what you need and when you need it and we can discuss your project. There's no obligation and I won't tie you to anything until we've agreed scope and you're happy to proceed.
